AI Literacy Explained

    What is AI Literacy?

A simple guide to AI literacy: what it means, the skills it covers, and why it matters for every student and teacher. AI is now part of everyday life, from search and social media to the tools students use to learn - AI literacy is what helps people understand and use it well.

    A simple definition

AI literacy is using AI with judgement.

AI literacy is the ability to understand how artificial intelligence works, use AI tools effectively, think critically about what AI produces, and use it in a safe and responsible way.

It does not mean becoming a programmer. It means being a confident, informed user of AI rather than a passive one. This understanding sits at the heart of global frameworks from UNESCO and the OECD, which HAILM follows when designing its learning.

    Why it matters

AI literacy keeps you in control.

    AI is everywhere

Students and teachers already use it daily, often without realising.

    It protects you

Knowing how AI works helps you spot bias, errors, misinformation and deepfakes.

    A future skill

AI literacy is increasingly expected in study and the workplace.

    Keeps you in control

The goal is to use AI with judgement, not to depend on it blindly.

    The framework

The four parts of AI literacy.

Most frameworks describe AI literacy as four connected skills.

    Understand AI

Know what AI is, how it learns from data, and where it is used.

    Apply AI

Work with AI tools well and safely, including asking good questions, or prompting.

    Evaluate AI

Think critically about AI outputs, checking for bias, mistakes and limits.

    Use AI responsibly

Apply AI ethically, with care for privacy, fairness, honesty and human judgement.

In India, AI literacy is now built into national policy through NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023, with AI being introduced in schools from Class 3 in 2026–27.

    For everyone in school

AI literacy for students, teachers and schools.

AI literacy looks a little different for each group, and HAILM has a clear path for all three.

    AI for Students

    A grade-wise journey from Grades 3 to 12.

    AI for Teachers

Free, certified training and classroom tools.

    AI programme for Schools

A whole-school programme for principals and leaders.

    How to build it

    Build AI literacy for free.

You build AI literacy step by step: learn the basics, practise with real tools, and reflect on how to use AI safely and fairly.

HAILM offers a free, structured path for students from Grades 3 to 12 and for teachers, aligned to NEP 2020 and global frameworks.

    Aligned with the world

    Built on trusted frameworks.

HAILM's AI literacy approach is informed by UNESCO and OECD guidance and aligned to India's NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023.

    • NEP 2020
Aligned to India's National Education Policy.
    • NCF-SE 2023
      Stage-wise, age-appropriate progression.
    • For teachers

    FAQ

    Common questions, answered.

What is AI literacy in simple words?

It is the ability to understand, use, question and responsibly apply artificial intelligence in everyday life.

Is AI literacy the same as digital literacy?

No. Digital literacy is about using technology in general. AI literacy is a newer, more specific skill focused on understanding and using AI well.

Do you need coding to be AI literate?

No. AI literacy is for everyone and does not require programming. It is about understanding and using AI wisely.

At what age should AI literacy start?

It can begin early. HAILM introduces age-appropriate AI literacy from Grade 3, in line with how AI is now being taught in Indian schools.
